When creating a configuration in ELMA Designer, you can select its type. The configuration type defines how ELMA Designer connects to the configuration file and to the database. Configurations in ELMA Designer can be local or remote.
In case of a local configuration,ELMA Designer works directly with the configuration files. A local configuration is usually located on the same computer where ELMA Designer is launched, or on computers connected through a local network. In configuration parameters, you specify the path directly to the configuration file.
The local configurations are mainly used to model and test new business processes and system objects. Fig.1 shows how ELMA Designer interacts with a local configuration.

In case of a remote configuration, ELMA Designer works with configuration files through an ELMA server. In configuration parameters, you specify the path to an ELMA server, not the path to the configuration. Fig.2 shows how this works.

Attention!
It is not recommended to connect two or more ELMA Designers to one configuration.
When ELMA is first installed, the configurations are by default created in the configuration folder specified upon system installation; and in the connection.config file, stored in ..//Web.
